Top box and bottom box scores are [summary statistics](/edit-access/summary-statistics) that represent the sum of frequencies for multiple values. <img src="/uploads/upload/image/5200/direct/1598373885594-1598373885594.png" alt="Stacked horizontal bar chart displaying Q13 survey responses comparing Product B device ratings across five features (Dose counter, Wastage, Ease of daily use, Ease of packet and priming, Size). Each bar shows three segments: Bottom 2 Box in blue (46.0%-74.0%), Middle 3 Box in light blue (25.0%-53.0%), and Top 2 Box in green (24.0%-54.0%)." style="width: 623px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"> Often times top box scores are used in scale questions like the one below to summarize values into broader categories while still being able to view the entire distribution. <img src="/uploads/upload/image/5200/direct/1598374178180-1598374178180.png" alt="Tree view display of Q13 survey data showing 'Ease of daily use' expanded to reveal all seven response categories: -3 Significantly worse (1.0%), -2 (0.0%), -1 (8.0%), 0 Same (34.0%), +1 (32.0%), +2 (18.0%), and +3 Significantly better (7.0%). Below shows collapsed summary boxes: Bottom 2 Box (1.0%), Middle 3 Box (74.0%), Top 2 Box (25.0%), with N=100. Three additional collapsed features are listed: Ease of packet and priming (24.0%), Size (24.0%), Wastage (47.0%), and Dose counter (54.0%)." class="fr-fic fr-dib"> ## ## Display top/bottom box scores Press on an element's [context menu](http://help.protobi.com/newusers/basic-navigation-in-protobi#Context%20menu-8) and choose "Statistics...". <img src="/uploads/upload/image/5200/direct/1598376327356-1598376327356.png" alt="Modal dialog titled 'Select summary statistics' with a question mark help icon, displaying checkboxes for various statistics. The 'Basis' checkbox is checked, while Distribution, Unweighted basis, Mean, Median, Sum, Min, Max, Count distinct, Standard deviation, and Standard error are unchecked. Three custom boxes are checked and configured: 'Box 1' set to [1,2], 'Box 2' set to [3,4,5], and 'Box 3' set to [6,7]. Box 4 is unchecked with placeholder text 'e.g. 1 or [1,2]'. At bottom, 'Apply recursively to all children?' is checked. Cancel and Ok buttons appear at the bottom." class="fr-fic fr-dib"> At the bottom of the summary statistics dialog there are empty boxes where you can define box scores. Although **Q13** is using a 7 point scale ranging from -3 to +3, the underlying values are actually 1 to 7. When adding box scores you will need to reference the underlying values. We can view **Q13** values by choosing "[Format...](/edit-access/formatting)" from the context menu: <img src="/uploads/upload/image/5200/direct/1598373952198-1598373952198.png" alt="Modal dialog titled 'Edit format: Q13' showing a data table with seven rows representing scale values 1-7. Additional columns for Mean, Sort as, Sort last, Hide, and Remove are visible with checkboxes and x buttons. Two checkboxes at bottom are checked: 'Group unformatted values into [other]' and 'Apply recursively to all children?'. A blue 'Clear all formats' link appears below. Cancel and Ok buttons are at top right." style="width: 580px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"> ## Label box scores To specify a label for box score summary statistics, put a colon after the value array and type in the label. If a label is not specified, then Protobi uses the values' format as a default. <img src="/uploads/upload/image/5200/direct/1598381017307-1598381017307.png" alt="Simple dialog box displaying four checkbox options for summary box configuration. The fourth option 'Box 4' is unchecked with placeholder text 'e.g. 1 or [1,2]'. Gray Cancel and blue Ok buttons appear at the bottom right." style="width: 303px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"> ## Display box scores as the bars in a chart When displaying a group of scale questions as a [Print Layout chart (beta)](/charts/beta-chart), there is the option to hide the individual values and show only the box score percentages. <img src="/uploads/upload/image/5200/direct/1598380416037-1598380416037.png" alt="Horizontal stacked bar chart for Q13 displaying detailed 7-point scale responses across five features: Ease of daily use, Ease of packet and priming, Size, Wastage, and Dose counter.
